Chairman Groen to Speaker Turzai: Tell your caucus to come back to Harrisburg and pass a budget

HARRISBURG, PA– The Pennsylvania House of Representatives is adjourned until Saturday afternoon, giving way for its members to make a trip up to New York City for the annual Pennsylvania Society weekend. Pennsylvania Democratic Party Chairman Marcel L. Groen released the following statement in response to the news that the House adjourned:

“It’s frankly mind-boggling that Speaker Turzai would have the audacity to adjourn the House of Representatives until Saturday afternoon when there is no budget agreement in sight.

“In the past six months, we have seen a radical caucus hold our commonwealth’s budget hostage. Their actions reached the boiling point when the House Republicans walked away from a budget framework that Governor Wolf and both House and Senate Republican and Democratic leadership had all agreed to.

“School districts are on the verge of shutting down and non-profits are forced to lay off workers to keep the lights on, but instead of demanding their rank and file come back and compromise, just as everyone else has, the Speaker is allowing ample time for his members to go to another state to rub elbows with lobbyists and donors.

“The real Pennsylvania society– the hardworking men and women of this commonwealth– is suffering because House Republicans refuse to compromise on the budget.

“As John Micek of Penn Live and The Patriot-News pointed out, the House Republicans have no one to blame for ‘needlessly prolonging an endless debate’ but themselves. I call upon Speaker Turzai to call his members back to do the job they were elected to do, and pass a budget that all parties agreed to. It’s time for them to grow up.”
