Organizing For America

"It isn't a Democratic issue, a Republican issue or an independent issue. This is people talking to their neighbors who are suffering. ... These are issues affecting everyone. They know how it's affecting their paycheck, they know how it's affecting the people who are losing their jobs,"
- PA State Director for OFA Elizabeth Lucas, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, 07/02/09

"Our group's intent is to work with area Democrats"
-- PA State Director for OFA Elizabeth Lucas, Williamsport Sun-Gazette, 07/01/09

About OFA:

Organizing for America, the successor organization to Obama for America and a project of the Democratic National Committee, is building on the movement that elected President Obama by empowering communities across the country to bring about our agenda of change.

OFA is committed to building on and strengthening the historic grassroots network created during the campaign and helping advance the President's policy agenda. In recent months OFA has organized thousands of events in support of President Obama's efforts to reform America's broken health insurance system, has collected hundreds of thousands of stories emblematic of the struggles Americans face in providing health care for their families and has collected more than one million declarations of support for the President's principles for reform.

OFA Pittsburgh Bus Tour

Nearly 600 Pittsburgh-area residents rallied to support efforts to pass health insurance reform this year at Organizing for America's (OFA) Health Insurance Reform Now: Let's Get it Done! Bus Tour stop in Pittsburgh Wednesday. Organizing for America Deputy Director Jeremy Bird was joined by Congressman Mike Doyle (D-PA); OFA Pennsylvania State Director Elizabeth Lucas; AFL-CIO Labor Chaplin Father Jack O'Malley; United Steelworkers International Vice-President Fred Redmond; Doctors for America Pennsylvania State Director Chris Hughes, M.D.; Allegheny County Democratic Committee Chair Jim Burns and Pittsburgh Small Business Owner Ben Hermstrom.

At the event OFA presented Congressman Doyle with thousands of declarations signed by constituents in support for President Obama's three principles for health insurance reform -- lower costs, protect choice and ensure all Americans have access to quality, affordable health care. The bus also made a stop in Hermitage, PA where supporters presented Congresswoman Dahlkemper's staff with more than 2,000 health-care declarations from Shenango Valley residents.

All summer long Pennsylvanians have been working across the state person-by-person, block-by-block in support of President Obama's principles for health insurance reform. Volunteers across the country have organized thousands of canvasses, phone banks and community events to build support for health insurance reform and highlight the importance of getting it done this year.

The bus tour kicked off last week with stops in Albuquerque, Phoenix, Denver, Des Moines, St. Louis and Indianapolis where thousands rallied to show their support for passing reform this year. The tour is part of a wider set of events in the next two weeks being held throughout the nation highlighting the strong support for reform throughout the country. In the coming days, the Health Insurance Reform Now Bus Tour will make stops in Charlotte, NC to continue amplifying the urgency of reforming our health insurance system this year.
