Those interested in understanding both the sordid, personal details and the complex policy decisions of the Clinton presidency will find a compelling study in Primary Colors author Joe Klein’s best-selling work The Natural. Klein’s accomplishment is not so much the journalistic separation of the personal from the political as it is the merger of the two realms; he creates extraordinarily insightful personal paradigms through which we can evaluate the political decisions of the Clinton White House. Neither unremittingly harsh nor overtly sympathetic, Klein covers topics from health care and affirmative action to the Monica Lewinsky scandal and Hillary Clinton’s strained but loving relationship with her husband. Though self-consciously substantive, Klein’s writing is not dense or abstruse; it is peppered with pithy character descriptions and carefully researched and compelling anecdotes which explain the often chaotic personal and political decisions which defined the Clinton presidency. At once informative and enjoyable, The Natural should prove a worthwhile read for any student of the presidency, policy, and interpersonal relations at the highest levels of government.
