FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 28, 2010
HARRISBURG, Pa: Sen. Robert Byrd of West Virginia passed away early this morning after six decades of service to his country. He was the longest-serving member of the United States Senate and of Congress in history. Pennsylvania Democratic Party Chairman Jim Burn released the following statement:
"It is a sad day for all Democrats and for all Americans as one of this country's greatest public servants passes on. Sen. Byrd served this country for nearly a quarter of its existence and has made a lasting impression on the lives of his constituents and the country he loved so much. From a state assemblyman in coal country to President pro tempore of the United States Senate, Sen. Byrd was a tireless advocate for all Americans.
"He will be well remembered for his love of the Constitution, a copy of which he kept in his breast pocket next to his heart that he would bring out frequently to remind his colleagues why they were there and what they should be doing. I hope that in this time of reflection, we can move forward in that same spirit of love for country and dedication to service to carry on Sen. Byrd's legacy
