Last week, one of the Republican leaders in our State Senate proposed a plan to change how Pennsylvania's votes are counted during presidential elections. A seemingly harmless plan to count PA's votes differently in the electoral college, it was introduced under the guise of making presidential voting "fairer." Unfortunately, it would do just the opposite.

Currently, Pennsylvania awards its electoral college votes for president in a winner-takes-all fashion, meaning each Pennsylvanian's vote is weighted equally. Under the Republicans' new plan, the electoral votes would be doled out by congressional district, voters in one district would have significantly more impact than voters in other districts.

It gets worse. Right now, Republicans are redrawing those congressional lines to their benefit. Because Republicans control Harrisburg, they have complete control over the congressional redistricting process that is currently underway.

Now they are preparing to use that power to draw Republican districts that will not only be safe for Republicans running for Congress, but under the new plan would mean many more votes for Republican presidential candidates.

It would also dramatically diminish the influence Pennsylvania has in presidential elections. Right now, the Commonwealth has a powerful voice in selecting the nation's next leader. Under this plan, presidential candidates would barely have cause to visit Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania would be an afterthought.

This is exactly the behavior that is turning the public against politicians. Instead of focusing on creating jobs and getting our economy back on track, Republicans in Pennsylvania are simply trying to help Republican politicians to win the next election. The Republican plan changes the rules solely for the benefit of Republican politicians.
