House GOP Skips Town, Leaving Schools Without Money

HARRISBURG, PA— With only two days until Christmas, House Republicans are planning to leave town without delivering much-needed funding to Pennsylvania’s schools and human service agencies—only a day after a crucial vote positioned the budget framework for final passage to send to the Governor’s desk.

“Speaker Turzai and Leader Reed have failed again,” said Pennsylvania Democratic Party Chair Marcel L. Groen. “Failed to lead, failed to deliver on the promise to educate our children, and failed to pass a budget for the people of Pennsylvania.”

“This is ludicrous. This is shameful. Shortly after canceling votes for the day, House Republican leaders told reporters that they had everything lined up to get a budget over to the Governor’s desk that would fund our schools and human services. Governor Wolf stood ready to sign it, but instead of calling for a vote, Speaker Turzai and Leader Reed are letting their members leave town.”

“Meanwhile, the House Republicans cheered behind closed doors before leaving the people of Pennsylvania high and dry.”
