Today, we’d like to tell you a little about our endorsed candidate for the Pennsylvania Supreme Court – Judge Dwayne Woodruff.
Judge Woodruff’s path to his candidacy for the Supreme Court isn’t your typical one. After graduating from the University of Louisville in Kentucky in 1979, Woodruff made his way to Pennsylvania when he was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers.
What’s even more impressive than his 37 career interceptions and his Super Bowl ring is the fact that Woodruff earned his law degree from Duquesne University School of Law in 1988 after taking night classes and spending days and weekends on the football field.
After his graduation, Woodruff continued to showcase his dedication and talent in both football and law. For three years, Woodruff was a practicing lawyer while continuing to play for the Steelers.
Following his retirement from football, Woodruff started his own law practice, becoming the founding partner of the highly renowned Woodruff & Flaherty, P.C.. Woodruff would later run for and be elected to a judgeship on the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas in 2005 where he has presided mainly over family court matters.
In his role, Judge Woodruff has always made the success of children his top priority. He considers it a privilege to preside over adoption hearings in his courtroom that give children loving homes and ensures that any young person that comes before him in court learns from their mistakes and is able to rise to their full potential.
Judge Woodruff feels that his work with young people is a calling with responsibilities that shouldn’t end with the job. That’s why he spends time outside the courtroom in the community. He co-chairs the National Campaign to Stop Violence’s “Do the Write Thing Challenge”—a unique initiative which gives middle school students the opportunity to communicate their thoughts on the impact of violence in their lives and to make personal commitments to reduce violence.
Above all of his career accomplishments, Woodruff is most proud of his wonderful family. He and his wife, Joy, have been married for 38 years, and have three adult children. His daughter Jillian is an OB/GYN and his daughter Jenyce and son John have both followed their father into the legal profession. Woodruff and his family worship at Allegheny Center Alliance Church where he has served as an Elder, Growth Group Facilitator and a Marriage Ministry Mentor.
Judge Woodruff’s incredible career and commitment to his community are a testimony to how hard work and integrity lead to success. The Pennsylvania Supreme Court would be lucky to have Judge Woodruff on the bench.
