Yesterday, the Pennsylvania Capital-Star reported that Pat Toomey is supporting Donald Trump’s refusal to cooperate with House investigators in the impeachment inquiry.
“Pat Toomey is inventing illegitimate roadblocks to hold up the impeachment inquiry in order to protect Donald Trump,” said Beth Melena, senior communications advisor for the Pennsylvania Democratic Party. “Pat Toomey came up with every partisan excuse in the book to defend Trump’s efforts to withhold information from Congress, preventing the American people from their right to the truth.”
“It’s no surprise that Pat Toomey would throw partisan impediments in the way of this investigation. The President of the United States asked a foreign country to investigate a political rival, and all Pat Toomey has said is that it is ‘inappropriate.’ ‘Inappropriate’ is using the wrong fork at a formal dinner. Asking a foreign countries to investigate your political rivals is an impeachable offense. Pat Toomey will stop at nothing to protect this corrupt president.”
“The White House said Tuesday that it will not cooperate with House Democrats’ impeachment inquiry, ratcheting up tensions between the legislative and executive branches amid an outcry from Democrats that the Trump administration is stonewalling their investigations.” [Washington Post, 10/8/19]
“During an appearance in Harrisburg on Wednesday, U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., accused House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., of conducting a ‘secret’ investigation and said the House should hold a formal vote on an inquiry. ‘There’s no due process, there’s no opportunity for the administration to make their own defense to present witnesses,’ Toomey said, complaining that House Republicans have not been given subpoena power. He accused Pelosi of ‘intentionally pursuing a completely politicized and very badly flawed process.’…Asked whether he believed the White House’s resistance constituted an obstruction of justice, Toomey deferred, saying ‘that’s a technical legal question,’ adding that ‘I don’t see it that way.’” [Pennsylvania Capital-Star, 10/9/19]
“As Democrats accelerate their impeachment investigation of President Donald J. Trump, one of the most critical questions around his future is whether Republicans will break ranks. So far, there is no sign of that from Pennsylvania Sen. Pat Toomey. In a brief interview Wednesday, he repeated his view that it was “inappropriate” for Trump to press foreign countries to investigate a political rival, Joe Biden, but said that didn’t merit impeachment. The comments from the lone Republican senator in the Philadelphia region suggest he has not been moved by two furious weeks of revelations, including more Trump calls for foreign investigations and the White House’s stonewalling of Democratic investigators.” [Philadelphia Inquirer, 10/9/19]
