The January 6th Committee subpoenaed Mastriano for “relevant” information, but Bill McSwain also “received various allegations of voter fraud,” and Lou Barletta signed on as an “alternate elector” for Trump. Will they be the next GOP candidates targeted with a subpoena?
PENNSYLVANIA — Doug Mastriano’s role in the Jan. 6 insurrection has earned him a national reputation — and now, it’s earned him a Congressional subpoena. But Mastriano isn’t the only Trump ally and GOP PA gubernatorial hopeful who was involved in Trump’s attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election.
As Trump’s U.S. Attorney, Bill McSwain had a “job and duty” to investigate cases of voter fraud, and in a letter to Trump, he claimed to have “received various allegations of voter fraud,” but McSwain never filed any charges. What’s even more interesting, McSwain reportedly received a call from Trump himself “to cajole and wheedle and demand” that he launch a voter fraud investigation. Furthermore, the U.S. House Oversight Committee released documents, including a letter detailing outlandish claims of voter fraud in PA sent from state Sen. Doug Mastriano to Acting Deputy Attorney General Richard Donoghue — with then-U.S. Attorney Bill McSwain copied.
McSwain claims to have knowledge of voter fraud, was reportedly called by Trump, and knew of Mastriano’s efforts, so will McSwain’s involvement in Trump’s attempts to undermine our democracy earn him a subpoena, too?
The January 6th Committee also cited the alternate electors scheme in their letter to Mastriano, and none other than Lou Barletta was an “alternate elector” himself. Barletta’s status as part of a nationwide plan to help Trump steal the 2020 presidential election has drawn scrutiny from across the country. Others involved in this alternate elector scheme have already been subpoenaed, including one of Barletta’s former campaign staffers. Is Barletta next?
“While Doug Mastriano is the first ‘Super MAGA’ primary candidate to receive a subpoena for his role in the Jan. 6 insurrection on our Capitol and spreading election lies, another connection between the many GOP gubernatorial candidates and Trump’s attempt to overthrow our democracy comes to light every day,” said Pennsylvania Democratic Party spokesperson Marisa Nahem. “Bill McSwain and Lou Barletta joined Doug Mastriano and Donald Trump in their dangerous and unprecedented attempts to undermine the results of the 2020 presidential election and throw out the votes of millions of Pennsylvanians. Pennsylvanians are left to wonder — will McSwain and Barletta’s efforts land them subpoenas from the January 6th committee?”
