AS ANTI-CHOICE ACTIVISTS RALLY AGAINST WOMEN’S HEALTH CARE, A DEMOCRATIC GOVERNOR IS THE ONLY THING PREVENTING PA FROM BECOMING THE NEXT TEXAS

While the first Pennsylvania March for Life rally brought anti-choice activists and politicians like Doug Mastriano and Charlie Gerow together in Harrisburg, polling shows majorities of Americans oppose Texas’ abortion ban. But the men of the “Super-MAGA” primary remain committed to the far-right and are doubling down on their efforts to make Pennsylvania the next Texas.

PENNSYLVANIA — Today, the Pennsylvania March for Life rally brought anti-choice activists to Harrisburg, but the majority of Americans oppose key provisions in Texas’ abortion ban — a reality that’s putting the “Super-MAGA” primary contestants in a tough spot.

As the 2022 Republican primary heats up, the far-right PA-Gov candidates are putting Donald Trump and the far-right anti-choice litmus tests ahead of a majority of Pennsylvanians. Local media has managed to get all candidates, except Bill McSwain, on the record with their anti-choice views. When asked by WHYY, Lou Barletta, Doug Mastriano, Scott Martin, Charlie Gerow, and Joe Gale all reaffirmed their support for draconian abortion bans, with Mastriano even calling the Texas ban, which doesn’t include any exemptions for rape or incest, “great news.” At the launch of McSwain’s campaign, he said on his website that he would sign anti-choice legislation.

Pennsylvanians have had their reproductive care protected thanks to pro-choice governor Tom Wolf who promised to “veto any bill that attempts to restrict abortion.” Now, as the Supreme Court announced it would hear a challenge to Roe v. Wade in Mississippi, the far-right Republicans competing to serve Trump and Super-MAGA voters in the governor’s mansion are doubling down on their dangerous and unpopular views.

“While Harrisburg Republicans are busy pushing their extreme anti-choice agenda, the far-right gubernatorial candidates are doubling down on their support for unpopular, draconian abortion bans,” said Pennsylvania Democratic Party spokesperson Marisa Nahem. “At a time when women’s rights are more at risk than ever before, people feel the urgency to elect a governor who will protect women’s health care. Pennsylvanians need a governor who will stand up for them — not one who will put the Super MAGA right and their own party first.”
