AS SCOTUS HEARS CHALLENGE TO ROE V. WADE, GOP GOV CANDIDATES WANT TO TURN PA INTO NEXT TEXAS

We’re quite literally one election away from essentially becoming Texas

PENNSYLVANIA — Today, the Supreme Court of the United States heard an emergency challenge to Texas’ extreme abortion ban — legislation that outlaws “nearly all abortions in the state” — even those in cases of rape or incest. If the Supreme Court upholds the Texas ban, access to abortion would be left up to the states, and the Republican candidates for Governor have already signaled that they would sign a Texas-style ban here in Pennsylvania.

When asked by Pennsylvania news outlets, Republican candidates Lou Barletta, Doug Mastriano, Scott Martin, Bill McSwain, Charlie Gerow, and Joe Gale all reaffirmed their support for draconian abortion bans, with Mastriano even calling the law “great news.”

In contrast, Attorney General Josh Shapiro has made a clear commitment to defending Roe v. Wade and reproductive rights from far-right extremists who want to turn Pennsylvania into the next Texas.

“Today’s Supreme Court hearing makes clear that the stakes couldn’t be higher for reproductive rights — the far-right men fighting to serve Trump as Pennsylvania’s next governor have made it crystal clear that they will support extreme abortion bans,” said Pennsylvania Democratic Party spokesperson Marisa Nahem. “The far-right candidates want to turn Pennsylvania into the next Texas, and the only thing stopping a Texas-style abortion ban from becoming law here is a Democratic governor.”
