On November 5th in Berks County, two county commissioner seats, a key mayoral race, the District Attorney’s office, and a number of countywide leadership roles are on the line. Winning those seats could transform the county for years to come!
The positions at stake are crucial to tackling gun violence, enacting criminal justice reform, building our economy, and ensuring the transparent and efficient use of your tax dollars.
Every election matters, and we’re urging the Democrats of Berks County not only to vote, but to support our Democratic candidates every day until Election Day! Here’s who you’ll see on the ballot in countywide races this November and how to help them win.
Who’s on the Ballot
Pennsylvania Superior Court
Thousands rely on Pennsylvania courts for a fair shot in the era of mass incarceration, anti-union litigation, and GOP gerrymandering. We must ensure the Superior Court—our state’s second highest circuit—consists of judges who work for the people!
Amanda Green-Hawkins
Amanda Green-Hawkins grew up in a working-class union family. When she began her law career, she had the option to take a job at a high-powered law firm, but she chose to fight for workers instead.
For nearly twenty years, Amanda has defended workers’ rights in court as counsel for United Steelworkers. Now, she wants to fight for women and workers from the other side of the bench.
Dan McCaffery
Judge Dan McCaffery grew up in working-class Philadelphia and has spent all his adult life serving the people.
Currently, Judge McCaffery serves on the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas in one of the country’s busiest trial divisions. His record is one of sterling integrity and fairness, and he’s the only candidate, in any party, Highly Recommended by the PA Bar Association.
For Retention: Judge Anne Lazarus
A third Superior Court candidate, Judge Anne Lazarus, is eligible for retention on the circuit this November. Democrats should vote “Yes” on Judge Lazarus’ retention vote.
County Board of Commissioners
The Berks County Board of Commissioners are responsible for the operation of county government. If we win these seats, we’ll finally be in control of a number of key local issues, including schools, public transportation accessibility, and local environmental protection.
Donna Reed
Reading City councilwoman Donna Reed wants to work to strengthen the Berks business sector.
She wants to foster a cooperative atmosphere among the county, municipal governments and private industries.
Kevin Barnhardt
An anchor of the Berks County community, Kevin Barnhardt is running for his fourth consecutive term on the Board of Commissioners.
He has worked on various projects to improve county government and provide opportunities to enhance services.
District Attorney
It’s the duty of the District Attorney to protect the people of Berks County and ensure equal justice for all of its people. District Attorneys lead criminal justice reform and are a crucial bridge between law enforcement and the courts.
John T. Adams
John was elected D.A. in 2008 and has been exemplary in the role, winning various awards and recognitions. Prior, he was an Assistant D.A. and a parole officer, giving him a firsthand glimpse of the struggles convicted people face trying to rehabilitate and start anew.
John is seeking re-election to continue his work tackling opioid issues and gun violence with an eye towards prevention and diversion, not simply incarceration.
