WITF: Harrisburg mayor outlines $42 million COVID relief spending plan | WITF 

New affordable housing and more than $1 million in cash bonuses for police and firefighters are part of Harrisburg Mayor Wanda Williams’ plan for how the city should use more than $42 million it received from the federal government as part of the American Rescue Plan.

In total, the city received a little more than $47 million as part of the COVID relief plan passed by Congress and signed into law by President Joe Biden in March 2021. Williams’s proposal, which she outlined Wednesday, leaves out $5 million for potential administrative costs or future expenses.

Commissioners said a portion of the county’s $105 million in American Rescue Plan funds will pay for the broadband study.

WJET: Erie County Executive shares economic development plan

On Tuesday, May 3, Erie County Council passed the proposal to use American Rescue Plan money to create a “Fusion Cell” department. The Fusion Cell will manage and report the ARP funds in the county.

Erie County Executive Brenton Davis said it will also take the remaining $26 million and help leverage that into $100 million through other state and federal funds.

The county commissioners have held most of their $7.6 million in American Rescue Plan dollars close to the vest as discussion about possible broadband uses have been unfolding behind the scenes.
