ICYMI: PAT TOOMEY WANTS JIM CROW GEORGIA VOTING LAWS IN PENNSYLVANIA

PENNSYLVANIA —  This morning, Senator Pat Toomey joined Matt Maisel on FOX 43 for a stunning interview in which he advocated for the Jim Crow Georgia voting law to be applied in Pennsylvania.

When Maisel asked whether he would support implementing the same voting restrictions in Pennsylvania, Toomey replied: “The Georgia election law? Absolutely.”

Here’s what Pat Toomey wants in Pennsylvania, according to a New York Times analysis of the Georgia law:

The Republican-controlled legislature has more control over the State Election Board.

The secretary of state is removed as a voting member of the State Election Board.

The G.O.P.-led legislature is empowered to suspend county election officials.

Offering food or water to voters waiting in line now risks misdemeanor charges.

Voters will now have less time to request absentee ballots.

There are strict new ID requirements for absentee ballots.

It’s now illegal for election officials to mail out absentee ballot applications to all voters.

Drop boxes still exist … but barely.

Mobile voting centers (think an R.V. where you can vote) are essentially banned.

Election officials can no longer accept third-party funding (a measure that nods to   right-wing conspiracy theories).

“The Georgia election law is undemocratic, racist and a sinister power grab by the state’s dying GOP — and it is appalling that Pat Toomey thinks Pennsylvania deserves the same Jim Crow nonsense,” said Pennsylvania Democratic Party spokesman Brendan Welch. “Harrisburg Republicans tried time and again to overturn the legitimate results of the 2020 election, and it is horrifying that our own Senator believes they should control local election officials. Make no mistake: Pennsylvania Republicans will bring the same Jim Crow voting restrictions to our commonwealth the moment they get the chance. We must elect Democrats at every level to ensure that never happens.”
