MANUFACTURING AND UNIONS: WHY PENNSYLVANIA NEEDS THE AMERICAN JOBS PLAN

PENNSYLVANIA — President Joe Biden’s American Jobs Plan (AJP) will strengthen our economy by improving American manufacturing and creating more good-paying union jobs in the Keystone State.

More than nine percent (565,000) of Pennsylvania’s workforce is in manufacturing, accounting for about 11% of the state’s total economic output. The American Jobs Plan will strengthen  manufacturing in Pennsylvania and across the country with more than $300 billion to  bolster supply chains — and make it easier for U.S. manufacturers to expand their plants.

Additionally, the AJP includes the PRO Act, which would dramatically enhance the power of workers to organize and collectively bargain for better wages, benefits, and working conditions. Unions built the middle class, and President Biden believes that empowering workers to organize and collectively bargain is crucial for rebuilding the ladder to a middle-class life. The AJP will also guarantee union and bargaining rights for public service workers.

As President Biden proposes historic investments in American manufacturing and rebuilding workers’ rights, Americans have responded to his proposals: The American Jobs Plan is popular with bipartisan majorities, including many Republicans. Yet despite that, not a single Republican, including Pennsylvania Senator Pat Toomey, has shown interest in supporting the bill.

“This is the time for Republicans to join with President Biden and the Democrats in delivering this opportunity for the hard-working people of Pennsylvania. Pennsylvanians who have put in a lifetime of work in our state, as well as the next generation of workers, all support the American Jobs plan,” said PA Dems Spokesperson Rosie Lapowsky.  “If Congress is serious about delivering for Pennsylvania manufacturers and Keystone State workers, they’ll rally behind President Biden’s American Jobs Plan and pass his bill immediately.”
