PA REPUBLICANS READY TO OPPOSE DIRECT COVID RELIEF PAYMENTS TO THEIR CONSTITUENTS

PENNSYLVANIA — Today, the U.S. House will vote on President Biden’s American Rescue Plan, which would provide $1,400 COVID relief direct payments to American citizens. The measure is overwhelmingly popular among the public — even with Republicans — yet the vast majority of Republican Congressmen from Pennsylvania already plan to oppose it.

“There can be no doubt that Pennsylvania’s elected Republicans are out of touch with the communities they are supposed to serve,” said Pennsylvania Democratic Party Chairwoman Nancy Patton Mills. “Every Pennsylvanian is feeling the brunt of this pandemic — yet Republicans in Congress will look the other way instead of lending a hand in our time of need. Their opposition to stimulus checks is negligent and ignorant to the struggles of our neighbors.”

Poll after poll has shown that the overwhelming majority of Americans, including more than half of Republicans, support stimulus checks.

New York Times: “In the SurveyMonkey poll, 4 in 5 respondents said it was important for the relief bill to include $1,400 direct checks, including nearly 7 in 10 Republicans.”

New York Times: “The poll found that 78 percent of Americans supported the stimulus checks, including 90 percent of Democrats and 64 percent of Republicans — suggesting that Republicans in Congress who want to reduce the checks to $1,000 are out of step with their constituents on this issue.”

Yahoo News: “Of all 20 policies covered by the poll, the two most popular were the ones at the center of Biden’s current COVID proposal: $2,000 relief checks (74 percent favor vs. 13 percent oppose) and increased federal funding for vaccination (69 percent favor vs. 17 percent oppose).”
